Harold Maines comes to DVD
After years of anticipation, Midsummer Movies is proud to present The Transfiguration of Harold Maines on DVD. This 35-minute mockudrama tells the story of a man who left everything behind to pursue his life-long dream of becoming a horse. This classic film flows out of the long tradition of human-animal transformation tales that includes Ovid, Shakespeare, Kafka and The Incredible Mr. Limpet. More Zelig than This Is Spinal Tap, but embracing elements from both, The Transfiguration of Harold Maines is at turns humorous, touching, thought-provoking and inspirational.
The soundtrack for this short film is provided by Nashville recording artist and member of Strays Don’t Sleep, Neilson Hubbard. While clearly inspired by the electronic sounds and dramatic symphonic chords of a David Lynch film, Neilson really shines in several of the emotive melody lines and amusing themes that emphasize his unique sensibilities. Moreover, the film is interspersed with elaborate animation sequences which are used to illustrate Harold’s dream-life. These abstract collages serve as surreal counterpoints to the otherwise reality-based documentary-style cinematography.
This DVD released by Midsummer Movies contains a running commentary by director Jared W. Johnson and actor Doug Nimrick, a behind-the-scenes slideshow, the original trailer, and several deleted scenes. Now is your chance to order The Transfiguration of Harold Maines on DVD.
